In the past I lived in Greece in the city of Kavala for many years. It is the most beautiful city of the North Aegean for me.
Right across the city, by the coast of Eastern Macedonia, there is a stunning island called Thassos.
You can easily reach the island by ferry from the city port.
Daily ferries are frequently going to the island all year long at very low prices. If you choose to travel from the port of Kavala, the destination port on the island is Skala Prinos. The journey time is 1 hour and 15 minutes.
You can also travel by ferry from the port of Keramoti. This port is very easily reachable from the highway. If you choose to travel from Keramoti, the destination port on the island is Limenas (Thassos Capital Town). It is the shortest, fastest, cheapest, more popular, and most frequent route with a journey time of just 40 minutes.
Several Roll-on/Roll-off ferries operate throughout the year and carry passengers, cars, buses, motorcycles, trailers, and just about anything else that has legs or wheels.
They exclusively serve the island of Thassos and do not travel to any other Greek islands.
Thassos is a mountainous island characterized by rich olive groves.
The whole island has coasts around, such as Golden Beach in Skala Panagia, Golden Beach in Skala Potamia, Kinira, Paradisos, Thimonia, Aliki, Psili Ammos, Astris, Potos Coast, the Pefkari, the port of Limenaria to Trypiti, Atasa in Skala Marion, Akti Kallirachi, Akti Sotira, Alsylli Coast (Dasylion) in Skala Prinos, Skala Rachoniou, Pachi, Papalimani, Glyfada and the town of Limenas the coast of Agios Vasilios, the beach (settlement) on the eastern side of the city, Nisteri and Glykadi (2-3 km from Limenas). Also noteworthy are the springs found in Panagia of Thassos.
The climate of Thassos is temperate cool in the summer and mild in the winter.
The blue of the sea, the pine green, the golden sand, the blue of the sky make it one of the best choices for summer vacations.
When I lived in Greece I was visiting this island very often since it was so near of my town. Since I moved to the Netherlands, for last six years, I haven’t found the time to visit it.
The last time when I went to see my mom in Kavala, my friends suggested to me to join them for a day trip on the island. I was so happy and excited to see the island of Thassos after so many years again.
I didn’t see a lot of changes since my last visit. Some old shops were closed, some new were opened, but the saddest thing that changed is that so many hectares of forest was burned in the big fire at the summer 2016. It was really heartbreaking to see those burned hills that once was covered with green trees.
But things that didn’t change at all and are still breathtaking were the magnificent sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, picturesque mountain villages, rich history and unique natural landscapes in the world, that are ideal destinations for those who are looking for a holiday by the sea but also for touring, local traditions, and historical treasures.
My day trip to Thassos island started from the port of Keramoti, one Sunday morning. The route from Kavala to Keramoti was passing trough the amazing fields of sunflowers.
The landscape looked like a beautiful painting.
The line at the port seemed huge but as I earlier mentioned the ferries are very frequent, so we didn’t wait more than 10 minutes until we reached our ferry.
While we were waiting to get inside one of the port workers caught an octopus right there in the port, in front of our eyes, just few meters from the ferry. I managed to capture few photos with my mobile phone, I will upload the photos one day. It was not very big octopus, but it was an interesting thing to watch how fast he caught him.
From the ferry bridge you can enjoy a breath taking view towards the Keramoti town and the port.
Surrounding is so beautiful with the island of Thassos in the background.
The weather was great and the sky clear blue.
During our ferry ride a whole army of beautiful seagulls was flying around us.
Kids were enjoying very much feeding them with Cheetos.
It was so nice spectacle to watch and to capture with my camera.
Later on we went directly to the Golden sand beach. We stayed there and enjoyed swimming, sunbathing and drinks until we got hungry.
We decided to go to the Theologos village that is located high in the mountains.
This village is famous for fresh and tasty grilled meat.
We ate at the old tavern that is very popular for the fresh and great quality dishes and excellent service. The name of the tavern is Iatrou.
The owner Mr. Kostas Iatrou is very attentive towards all his guests.
He always personally approach all his guests to ask if they are satisfied with the food and the service.
After our amazing lunch at Iatrou tavern we paid a visit to the folk museum of Theologos village.
The entrance fee is only €2.
There you can take a glimpse on how people lived in the old ages, how they dressed, what they were eating back then, and what tools they were using for their agricultural work and in the households.
It is a very interesting place to visit while in Thasos.
The village have quite interesting architecture.
I suggest you to walk around and explore it trough its cobblestones charming narrow roads, filled with colorful flowers and beautiful rustic houses.
Later on we went to Potos village for coffee, ice cream and some shopping.
The village by the sea was picturesque and lively as always.
With so many traditional Greek restaurants, cafe bars and shops and beautiful organized and clean beaches.
We went back to the Kavala port with one of the last ferries from Scala Prinos.
I enjoyed my day trip to the island of Thassos after so many years very much.
For one day we managed to make the whole round of the island and to do all those exciting things that tourists usually do.
I had a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to go there again in the future, but next time I wish to spend more days there and to have the chance to visit more villages and beautiful beaches.
I would recommend this island for vacations to everyone. If you decide to follow my advice and you are looking for accommodation, please check the link below.
